Peace jar

Lately I was volunteer for the ‘walk of peace’ in Utrecht, an initiative from PAX. One of the other volunteers, a nice lady, invited me to join a workshop ‘make a peace jar’, which at first meant to think about – and sort of meditate about – a moment/place in time where I felt absolutely happy. In that moment over there, sitting with a couple of people thinking and sharing our stories I remembered visiting mount Horeb. The view there in the morning is like in the photo above.

When I was there, we climbed the mountain at night, remembering walking up, the smell of camels and donkeys, a more or less silent group of people. Whispered conversations. We came at the top of the mountain about 15 to 30 minutes before sunrise, being completely dark. Resting and waiting there for sunrise we got kind of cold.

20180923_161653First sign of dawn was the sky lighting up a bit, giving the mountains a sort of golden glow, golden lining on top, and after a while the sun came up really fast. within 15 minutes after that temperature rose to a comfortable warm temperature.

After remembering all this we made with clay and accessories a sybolic representation of that particular moment in the lid of a jar, and put the jar over it afterwards. What I made was the black and blue mountain, colors from the night and dawn, a yellow pin representing the upcoming sun and the golden lining round the environment in that particular moment. What I liked about the jar having several sides is that it opened the possibility to look at it from different angles.

It was a lovely workshop at a rainy sunday at the 23rd September this year (2018)

Imagine by John Lennon

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today…

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one
